E-learning - Educação à Distância

E-learning

Have you ever heard about Distance Learning in Brazil? Of course.
Do you know how it works? Maybe
Did you know that there are different forms of distance learning and Brazil usually use just one term to characterize them all? Probably not.
After an excellent class of Päivi Aarreniemi-Jokipelto, I will talk about distance learning and its different sub-areas.
I'll start this discussion with 6 terms:
E-learning, Distance Learning, Online Learning, Blended-Learning, M-Learning, T-Learning.
The terms sound a little strange, confused and very similar, so I will talk about my interpretation.
Distance Learning:
It's the kind of learning where the teacher and the student are physically separated, in different environments.
E-Learning:
E-learning and E-Learning is the use of any electronic tools for learning, such as intranet, internet, satellite, television, mobile phones, tablets and others. E-Learning in my view is a form of distance learning, but we can work with this method in a face-to-face approach by using softwares or applications in the classroom for example.
Online Learning:
The name says it all, online learning, connected to the internet. We can cite as examples online courses as Englishtown or short courses of some institutions such as FGV.
Blended-Learning:
This method is the real Brazilian "Distance Learning". One in which the majority of the course is given by virtual platforms but with face-to-face meetings. Our undergraduate courses in distance education usually follow this pattern.
M-Learning:
The Mobile-Learning is learning using mobile devices such as phones and tablets. Applications are the main tools in this system. Many applications are useful in this mode depending on each subject.
T-Learning:
It is a very new concept and would be learning using interactive or smart TVs TVs. The student can learn in a mixed system, using television, internet and applications with one tool.
To better explain the relationship between these modes of learning I did this figure that I believe make it clear these settings.
I hope I have explained the difference between these terms and, speaking of Brazil, I believe that our Distance Education is all based on Blended Learning.

Now two little questions we had to answer in class and serve for reflection:
What kind of E-learning or distance learning TOOLS  a VET teacher for a future in Brazil should be able to use?

What kind of E-learning or distance learning COMPETENCES OR SKILLS a VET teacher for a future in Brazil should have?
The answers are on the pictures.
In just one "lecture" my conception of Distance Education has changed a lot. I hope it changes more and more and I become able to use these tools and acquire these competences and skills.
I hope you enjoy and really think about the issues.

Thank you for your interest in reading.

E-learning, Distance Learning, Online Learning, Blended-Learning, M-Learning, T-Learning.
Online Learning:
O nome diz tudo, aprendizagem online, conectado à internet.

  1. Thank you, Bruno! It's good to have the concepts clear from the start. I think blended learning is most common in Finland as well, although there are various mobile learning experiments as well, often in primary school!

  2. Sisko! Thank you for your comment. I really liked Päivi's classes and I'm learning a lot about E-learning. Some classes don't give us some concepts, but give us a way to seach these concepts and it is very nice. I feel like an active student.
